Greeting in Costa Rica
Een Costaricaanse familie houdt een zondags uitje

Pura Vida! This expression you’ll see and hear everywhere in Costa Rica. Literally it means: ‘pure life’. If you ask: ‘How are you?’ the Costa Rican answer: ‘Pura Vida’. ‘Did you have a good meal?’ ‘Pura Vida’. A tourist travelling through the country who speaks out these magical words will be welcomed by a warm smile.

Travelling amidst the Tico’s (it is the way the Costa Rican talk about themselves) is ‘Pura Vida’. Costa Ricans leave you in peace: In the public spaces the street sellers who want you to buy their products will not approach you in a inconvenient way. In the countryside greets are always answered. Scholars wave if you pass by. If you are reading your map in a corner of a street, there is always somebody to help you out. Costa Ricans radiate such a kindness and cheerfulness that it will give you the feeling to be welcome.

Having contact with the locals during your trip is an unforgettable experience. It is a pity that not all of them speak English. Even so for Tico’s who are working in the tourism sector. The official language in Costa Rica is Spanish. If you don’t have abilities in this language it makes sense to learn a few words basic Spanish. It is the key to contact with the local people.

Costa Ricans appreciate good manners and they like it if tourists know to behave themselves this way. Simple things like greeting when you enter a place or to thank for a service done by someone are thoroughly appreciated. It even can be the start of a hilarious conversation in real Spanklish. This is what makes your vacation ‘Pura Vida’.
